If you’re looking for an elevated flooring option that’s long-lasting, durable, and brings natural warmth and beauty to your space, hardwood might be perfect. Natural wood has been a mainstay in both residential and commercial settings for decades. Modern wood floors are exceptionally wear-resistant, hypoallergenic, and easy to clean. Hamstra Carpet One Floor & Home in Strathroy, Ontario, is your local hardwood floor store. We carry a full range of wood flooring options for every taste, budget, and lifestyle.
From beautiful and bright birch, hickory, and white oak to rich, dark walnut and mahogany, we carry an extensive inventory of hardwood species. Each is defined by different characteristics like colour, grain patterns, and hardness. We also carry exotics like bamboo and cork, which are considered eco-friendly because they come from renewable resources that regenerate quickly. You can also choose hardwood products that are harvested from certified sustainable forests.
Beyond species, wood floor panels can also be styled in a variety of ways. You can choose different hardwood finish colours, shine levels, textures, plank shapes, and more. For instance, dark wood colours and rustic textures are popular if you’re going for a farm-style look. You can also find multi-colour wood floors, extra narrow planks, beveled edges, and beyond. Our experts can provide advice and tips as you sort through your options. For instance, a matte finish helps disguise scratches and abrasions better than a glossy surface, while narrow planks make a smaller room look more expansive.
There are two major hardwood types on the market: engineered and solid. Solid is the traditional choice, while engineered is a more modern option that’s grown in popularity over the decades.
Solid wood floors are made from premium hardwood throughout. The planks are typically ¾ inch thick and you can usually sand and refinish them several times throughout your home’s lifespan. Because solid wood planks are susceptible to warping in humid and water-prone spaces, we don’t recommend them for below-grade installations, bathrooms, or other areas and climates with moisture, heavy temperature fluctuations, or exceptionally dry air. During the winter months in regions like our own, the wood can become brittle and prone to gapping and splintering. In the humid Ontario summer months, solid wood can expand and cup. If you don’t have a climate-controlled space, or you are working in a more traffic-prone area, we recommend considering engineered hardwood.
Engineered wood planks are made using a layered construction. Anywhere from 3 to 7 layers of composite wood are laminated together in a cross-grain direction. At the surface is a genuine layer of high-end hardwood. This design stabilizes the plank by preventing it from swelling and shrinking. It also looks virtually identical to solid hardwood from the surface level, thanks to the veneer. You can install your engineered planks on any level of your home, including the basement, and in light-moisture spaces like hallways, low-use kitchens, and high-traffic living areas. Engineered planks may not last as long as solid wood. This is because you might not be able to refinish them as many times through the years. All of this depends on how thick the veneer is. We have higher-quality engineered planks that can be refinished just as often as solid wood, so they’ll last just as many years.
While solid hardwood is only recommended for dry, above-grade rooms, you can put engineered planks in basements, kitchens, mudrooms, and more. We also carry waterproof hardwood, which can go in bathrooms and other high-moisture areas without worry. Our store offers premium installation services at an affordable price. Whether you want a hardwood floor bedroom, wood floor living room, or more, we’ll ensure it looks beautiful and will last.
