In 1957, Peter Hamstra began his own business in Strathroy, selling clothing and other imported goods to immigrant families. This business started in the living room of his home and the back of his truck, eventually growing to his first location on Front Street in Strathroy.
From there, his sons Wick and Jake and son-in-law John moved with him to the current location on Caradoc Street in 1975, continuing to grow the business in floor and window coverings.
Many years of creating relationships and earning the trust of their customers have built a solid business that is now carried on by Wick’s son Richard, who became a partner alongside his father in 2001 and a dedicated staff.
Wick has since retired, but many of the staff he hired years ago are still the backbone of the company. Richard is now joined at work by his wife, Jana, and son Ben. Now, that’s what we call a family business!
When Opa, affectionately meaning grandfather, Peter Hamstra opened his first location on Frank St, the building was small. To accommodate this, an outdoor pulley system lifted the rolls of carpet up to the second floor—talk about innovation!
Hamstra then moved to our second and current location. When it was initially built, there was nothing on the block except for a car dealership, but it’s a busy neighbourhood now! With the changing times, it’s great to know you can always count on Hamstra Carpet One.
